Explorer Post 191
Fire Exploring is Learning for Life's career education program for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) or 15 to 20 years old who are interested in exploring firefighting as either a career or as a volunteer. Adults are selected by the fire department for involvement in the program. Color, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic background, economic status, or citizenship is not criteria for participation.
Fire Exploring's purpose is to provide hands-on job experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Exploring is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth and the organizations in their communities. Fire departments initiate an Explorer post by matching their people and program resources to the interests of young people in the community. The result is a program of activities that helps youth pursue their special interests, grow, and develop. Youth have an opportunity to learn about firefighting, develop leadership skills, build character and learn the meaning of community service and teamwork.
Fenton's Explorer Post 191 is one of the oldest operating Fire Explorer posts around. We have had a successful program for a number of years and many of the current members of the fire department came up through the Explorer program and joined the department when they turned 18. Explorers participate in almost all aspects of the job under supervised personnel in both training exercises and actual emergency situations. For example, they will help set up our equipment staging and firefighter rehabilitation area on scene of a house fire. They must learn where every piece of equipment is on the fire trucks so that when asked at a fire call for it, they can quickly find it and get it to the right person. Read a recent newspaper article on the Fenton Fire Explorers.
Explorers work side-by-side with firefighters, learning the skills necessary to perform their jobs. Explorers are a great asset to the fire department. For more information about fire exploring and joining the Fenton City Fire Department's Explorer Post 191, check out the Exploring Brochure (PDF). You can also call the station and leave your name and number for the Explorer Post Advisor and they will call you back. You can also show up and ask to speak with someone at the fire station regarding Explorers during the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month from 6 to 6:30 pm before our regularly scheduled training sessions start. Please feel free to ask any questions.
