During the City Council meeting on July 10th, 2023, Mayor Sue Osborn paused to recognize City Manager Lynn Markland during comments and reports. Markland started his career in Fenton on July 14th, 2008, during the great recession. For the past 15 years, Markland has served the City of Fenton as City Manager, overseeing and advising the progression of our city including three years during the COVID-19 Global Pandemic. To acknowledge and praise the work Markland has done, Osborn surprised him with a key to the city and a proclamation for Lynn Markland Day on July 14th, 2023.

Markland accepted this honor before members of council and the audience of residents and city staff members. "Thank you for supporting me for the past 15 years. We've always had a great City Council, DDA, Committees, and staff that do what needs to be done to make Fenton a vibrant and active town. It's because of the work that not only I have done, but what everyone has accomplished together. We all know that getting there is difficult, but staying there is even more challenging, so I want to thank you for the privilege to serving the City of Fenton. It has been rewarding for myself as well as the city."
Mayor Osborn gives Markland credit for many of the improvements in downtown. "You DID create the downtown! Lynn called me one day to show me plans for changes for our downtown and all I could say was 'WOW!' After 40 years of renovations we finally have the downtown we've always needed."
